Key West!

This year we planned to make a cross-country trip from our home in central Califonia to Key West Florida and then back by a slightly more northern route. First plan is about 45 days.

Key West!

Headed south to the Keys

Up bright and early after struggling til well after 11 p.m. with internet connections at the hotel.  Frustration finally ended my day.  I had nearly given up when a very nice guy who was at the hotel to repair their system saw and heard my problems and downloaded the software for my card and installed it for me.  But I never did get on-line.  The hotels system had crashed.

So anyway, we had a 7 a.m. wake-up call and got ourselves ready for a long day of driving.  All the way down to the very southern most point of the U. S. and then turn around and come back up.

The drive down was very uneventful except for the slow traffic in places and very fast traffic in others.  Florida drives think 45 mph means “go like ****” (sometimes as much as 70) and 55 mph means crawl along at 42.

The sky was clearing and looking good.
  Strange.

One thing I would definitely suggest. If you are planning on going to the Keys during the summer, especially if there is any chance of a storm, think twice!  The roads down and back are not the biggest and best roads in the country and in some places they are only two lanes, one coming and one going, so it would be very easy for traffic to be absolutely terrible. And if a storm was coming and evacuation was needed, it would be total chaos.

But when we got to Key West we spent a couple of hours looking up a couple of the landmarks, enjoying the sites, getting our pictures, sat and ate a light lunch and headed back north.

Lucky for us, we had very good weather most of the time. Only got really rained on during the day one time, and that was when we stopped at the Welcome center at the border to Florida, of all places. It dumped on us for ten minutes. Then cleared away. We teased the people in there that it had seen my California plates. :)
Night time storms we had a few times. They didn't bother us.

I love your blog ... personally we (Dan and I love storms) but do hate them if we are planning a day at the beach ... now I got to check out your photos ... so I see you have issues like me in regards to internet connections at hotel ... that is funny

Key West
Key West is the ultimate in southern tourist spots. Not only is it the most southern point in the United States, but because of the climate it is about the fairest place to sunbath and relax all year long. Of course it is also a very busy tourist destination so finding a place to park a car isn’t easy on this small 2 mile by 4 mile island. There are many, many places to stay and as many places to eat and drink. Scuba diving is popular as is fishing, and even just chartering a boat for a cruise is fun. Just be aware of the storm season. Hurricanes can ruin a vacation.
Southern most point in the nation
Key West, Florida is the southern most point in the United States and in 1983 they built a now famous buoy style monument. It has become one of the biggest attractions on the island and is at the corner of South and Whitehead Streets that claims to be the southernmost point in the contiguous 48 states. The point was originally just marked with a sign, which was often stolen. Brightly painted and labeled "SOUTHERNMOST POINT CONTINENTAL U.S.A.", it is one of the most visited and photographed attractions in Key West.

Are you sure about this being the southernmost point in the US? I was in Hawaii for the holidays and visited a place called South Point or Ka Lae, which claims to be the southernmost point in the US!
