Indio, and a date shake

We drove past a large number of wind machines.

From Redlands we headed further east on I-10 to Indio, where my wife remembers as a child that it was the only place she had ever had a date shake. Guess what? There is still a place in town where you can get lots of date foods. And date shakes are still on the menu. It was just turning 5pm as we walked to the door, and the girl was letting someone out. We gave her a real sob story, "This is the only place around that has date shakes and we remembered them from 50 years ago. Can’t we just buy one?" Well we must have hit the right string because she invited us in and we were able to get our date shake. Not quite as good as the ones we remembered, but still a real treat.

Then we stopped to get a little gas so we could make it on for a couple more hundred miles. This time we paid $3.89 a gallon. I didn’t top it off. But I did realize that my car (a Toyota Prius) gets such good mileage that by the time I need to fill up it takes more time to scrub the bugs off my windshield that to pump the gas!

What is date shake? A kind of beverage from date fruit?

Hadleys! Right? We used to stop there on the way to Palm Springs! I had one about 5 years ago. They've built some retail outlets around there... The gas prices are incredible - when I left CA it was less than a dollar!
