Historic Covington
May 3, 2008
This was sight number 1 in Covington, the Newton County Courthouse, built in 1884.
The small town of Covington, situated about thirty miles or so east of Atlanta turned out to be our last stop of the day. This nice little town has a wonderful historic district. And the town’s visitors bureau has made up a little map and directions that made the drive around the area quite fun and easy. There were 49 homes and buildings listed on the tour guide, and each one had a paragraph about the sight. We got about forty pictures of some terrific homes and other special old spots. I have tried to identify each picture we took but have not yet been able to. I will continue to try.
Then we decided to use this as our end for the day and located a nice hotel to stay in. It is the Baymont Inn & Suites.
Then into the newer part of town to eat at the Royal Palace. A nice Chinese Buffet with lots of selections and good taste.

Historic District
Originally begun in 1822 this small community has continued to prosper. Along the Main Street area and historical district are carefully restored manor homes, churches, parks and the downtown Square. Still the center of the community, The Square is often host to festive social events such as outdoor luncheon concerts. In 1988 Covington was awarded the designation of a Georgia "Main Street" city due to the community's dedication to the preservation of its 19th century structures. The walking or driving tour covers an area about a mile long from the square along Floyd Street. There were 49 homes, buildings, and attractions listed on the map and brochure which is available from the Chamber’s welcome center and it showed and explained very nicely the historic significance of each one. Covington, because of its many historic and well preserved or restored buildings is a frequent film location. We very much enjoyed taking this tour.

Baymont Inn & Suites - Covington
This was another of the motels that were listed in our newest catalog for Best Western, but is now under the name of Baymont Inns and Suites. Renovated in 2007 this two-story facility with outdoor corridors offers Microwaves, Refrigerators, Hairdryers, Iron and Ironing Boards, am/fm alarm clock radios, coffee makers, cable television and wireless high-speed internet access. A complimentary hot expanded continental breakfast is offered in the morning. They also offer a seasonal outdoor pool. Our room was clean and well furnished and the staff was quite helpful.
I'll give them a higher Amenities due to the very nice breakfast they served.

Chinese Buffet
This Chinese style Buffet restaurant looks like it has been here for sometime. They offered a large variety of items all of which appeared freshly cooked and prepared. Among the great variety were soups, a few salad items, many meat and vegetable dishes as well as steamed or fried rice and chow mien noodles. There was a small desert section to end your meal. The modest price included your choice of drinks with free refills. The staff was pleasant and helpful. This was a very typical Chinese buffet. Not bad, but not special.
