A short side trip thru the Whitest sand!

White Sands National Monument Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

This year we planned to make a cross-country trip from our home in central Califonia to Key West Florida and then back by a slightly more northern route. First plan is about 45 days.

A short side trip thru the Whitest sand!

Part of the White Sands Missile Range is the White Sands National Monument.  And after being held up a few minutes for the missile launch it just seemed right to check out the Monument.  It's like a small National Park.  A nice Visitors Center with lots of information and then a short drive back into the real dunes.  Of course there are also trails for hiking but we didn't do that. This area moves, as all sand dunes do, so in a few areas the paved road is covered by sand.  And in some areas the plants have roots that go down many feet because the sand has moved and tried to cover the plants.  We got some nice shots of the sand which by the way was Gypsum, and that is why it is so white.

Gypsum sand - clean and White!
The White Sands National Monument is located about 15 miles southwest of Alamogordo, New Mexico off US Highway 70. It is a 275 square mile desert made up of gypsum sand dunes. It’s the Gypsum that makes the sand so white.

The Visitors Center is a pueblo-adobe style structure built in the late
1930s and includes many interesting displays and data about the area.

There is a fifteen mile drive that takes you into the heart of the dunes and then loops through the area and back out to the entrance. There are also several trails that change from time to time as the dunes move and change. Rangers also give interesting guided tours.

The area is only open during daylight hours and there is no overnight camping allowed.

From time to time the Monument is closed for periods of up to three hours for missile testing from the White Sands missile range. Presently there is a $3.00 admission fee per person over 15 years of age.

Nice to see that white sand drifting like snow but warmer on the feet. Great spot (and review)!
