A quick visit to a beautiful town
Today I took Jordan on the train to Deventer, to meet with a friend and also to pick up Reagan again who had been staying with a friend from her old school for a couple of days. Stepping outside the train station the first thing I noticed was the drunks hanging around outside. Unfortunately this is a sight that will greet you at train stations in a lot of Dutch towns, I think in Meppel we are lucky that the town is too small to be attractive for these people.
Deventer is a beautiful town dating back as far as 768 AD, with lots of old buildings and a huge square in the city centre with the "Waag" located on it. As it was Easter Monday and all the shops were closed it wasn't very busy, but there were quite a few cafes open and the weather was nice so there was seating set up outside in the main square, the Brink.
We didn't have anything to eat here but stopped for ice cream at Talamini's, a very popular chain of ice cream shops in The Netherlands. We also walked around "Vogeleiland" or "Bird island" which was pleasant but a little run down and there was litter all over the place despite the many bins.I would have liked more time to explore the city. A few festivals are held here during Summer so that could be a good time to visit, or maybe the Dicken's festival which is held in December.
Our trip back home took a little longer that it should have as someone had decided to jump in front of a train and the tracks had to be cleared first... Not a very pleasant thought, that's one job I wouldn't like to be doing!
