Today was the day we celebrate Sinterklaas in The Netherlands.
The day started with Sinterklaas and a few Zwarte Pieten visiting Reagan's school. All the children and their parents waited outside the school for them to arrive. Some kids were dressed up as Zwarte Piet, a lot of them wore self-made hats and of course there was a lot of excitement! Suddenly a car pulled up and Sinterklaas and three Zwarte Pieten got out. The principal of the school welcomed them and then the kids started singing a typical Sinterklaas song: "Sinterklaasje kom maar binnen met uw knecht". After this all the kids, teachers and Sinterklaas and his Zwarte Pieten went inside, the parents were not allowed... Sinterklaas went around all the classrooms where all the children had prepared songs, poems and short plays.
In the afternoon Reagan and I went to the swimming pool as there was a special party there for all the children doing swimming lessons. They were playing and dancing in the water, and suddenly two Zwarte Pieten arrived! Apparently they couldn't swim so they didn't get into the water but the danced and played games with the kids which was lots of fun. They got into all sorts of mischief and the kids had a great time!
At night we had organised to celebrate Sinterklaas at home. My mum and her husband joined us, travelling from Ireland to join us. My stepmother and her partner were there, and my sister, husband and son. There were lots of traditional goodies to eat: speculaas, pepernoten, marsepein, gevulde kikkers en muizen, and we started the evening with a chocolate memory game! Suddenly there was a lot of banging at the door, and when we went to see what all the noise was about the kids found two large sacks filled with presents! The excitement was almost too much.... The rest of the evening was spentunwrapping presents, reading poems, and eating and drinking. It was a fun night!
