The view from Joel and Jill's couch.
I arrived in San Francisco safely and enjoyed a drive from the airport among the windy, steep streets. My good friends from a summer working in Alaska together, Jill and Joel, live in the Castro District of the city. This area is known for its proud gay/lesbian/etc. population and boasts a wide array of shops, markets, clubs and restaurants. Immediately up on my arrival from the airport we dined on a fabulous burrito!

I enjoyed many walks in the city, admiring the arcitecture of the various houses tucked into tight nooks or nestled onto steep hills. Every house seems to be reaching for the sky (or, in reality, a good view) much like a plant does in a forest - ever so slightly trying to peek out a bit farther than the rest. And speaking of plants... every available patch of unpaved space has a plant billowing out of it. The city is literally covered with lush greenery with interspersed colors of various flowers. It is very enjoyable in comparison to the brown-grassy streets elsewhere.

While my original purpose in San Francisco was to find and buy a car for my drive to Alaska, I am glad I was able to enjoy time with friends as well. I met many great people, had many splendid meals, and was able to enjoy the wonderful western sunshine. And alas, I did succeed in finding a mighty steed for my journey - a 1996 Subaru Legacy L Wagon. For those traveling north along the coast, or somewhere in Canada, be on the lookout for a classy guy in a classy car!
