Another pre-travel passeporte/visa matter
February 25, 2008
Those who might've read my other blog will know by now that I have that special passeporte for foreigners though I was born in Germany.
I call myself alien because that's exactly how I feel. A few people asked me why? Why is that I have no german citizenship?
Good question! I wondered too. :D I did since I flew to Vietnam the first time but rather and more when I turned 16.
- because with 16, in Germany, you are allowed to do a lot of things. Like going out (e.g. discos, bars) until 12 pm, drinking beer, or buying cigarettes.
It was uncool to have a fat, grey (yea not white not black, something inbetween) passport with you, with the fat note PASSPORTE FOR FOREIGNERS... lol while everyone had a simple, tiny, nice looking id card. You're id card just becomes more worthy at 16. How much I desired one of those... Well, I'm over that by now... I have built up a great companionship with my pass, some kind of a bond. The special kind. :D
- Another reason was because at that age you'll have to apply for the citizenship on ur own and can no longer rely on ur parents. I wish mom would've applied for one before I turned 16. *sigh*
However! My parents are refugees of the Vietnam War. Boat people. That's why I have that note valid for all countries except for Vietnam.
I know it's senseless I should not have the same status as them but I do.
I applied for a passporte years ago and I'm still waiting. They won't allow me to have more than one nationality, so I was told to apply to the the vietnamese state to dismiss me. And that, I tell ya, is bullshit! lol Since Vietnam doesn't even know that I exist. I don't have a vietnamese passport... I have a german one for FOREIGNERS. Hello? Germany can you hear me?
But what can I do? I have to be patient and apply for my visas..............
I planned a nice trip for 2008. I wanted to see Bangkok, HongKong, Guangzhou and probably Shenzen i. All in all 3 visas for Thailand, HK and China. Doable I thought. I mean at least Vietnam was not on the list. And I won't plan another Vietnam trip before I have my german pass.
I've just been too lucky. I shouldn't ask for more attention of Lady Luck.... at least this year haha.
I booked the flights already, planned a few accomodation things, printed everything, copied and filled the applications. Everything all set... I was ready for war. Then I found out that it'd take at least 6 weeks to get a Hong Kong visa. The application had to be sent per airmail to HK. They overlook it and grant it... or not. Cool I thought... I just have 4 weeks until my flight. :D I'll just try it though.
I drove to Essen to the Thai embassy... the visa was granted on the same day in ten minutes. I love Thailand! :D
I took the train to Frankfurt on another day, 3 hours to get there... I found the China embassy. Long queues... a lot of people want to go to China it seems. And then finally it was my turn.
Guy: Passeporte please!
Me: Sure *handing over my passeporte*
Guy: ... No sorry, no visa for you.
Me: What?
Guy: We don't accept these passeportes.
Me: WHAT?
Guy: I am sorry, next please.
Me: Wait, wait, I came all the way down here from North Rhine Westphalia and all u gotta say is: No sorry?
Why don't you accept my passeporte? You asshole? (ok I didn't say that)
Guy: China does not accept passeportes for foreigners.
Me: Does that mean you consider me an alien and I will never be allowed to enter China with this passeporte?
Guy: Exactly!
I lost. I backed down. I walked out, people staring at me... See that girl she didn't get a visa, she's an alien!
Lol at least that was what there eyes where saying... but who cares I'm a pro. I was in Frankfurt... I got denied in 2 minutes. I was not ready to head home already, not after driving so far. I went shopping instead haha.
When I was back home, I thought it over and replanned my trip. And a few days later I was on my way to Thailand. The only country that issued me a visa.
