The train ride from Venice to Austria was the most beautiful journey of my life...gorgeous paths through the snow-capped mountains and adorable picturesque villages.... I think I just stared and stared and stared for 7 hours straight. As much as I enjoyed Spain and Italy, we were finally getting into the areas of Europe that I really wanted to see...places where I felt a little more comfortable than southern Europe.

That all said, Vienna was a bit of a disappointment. The city was gorgeous, and we had a really great time there....but I think the whole time we both just felt like we were missing something. Something really big. It just didn't live up to my high expectations, I guess.

Aside from the first decent cup of coffee we'd had in nearly 3 weeks, the other highlights of Vienna were definitely the Stephansdom and the Opera. The Stephansdom is (sigh) another church. But we didn't necessarily go becasue of it's church-y value. We went for the catacombs. ! Underneath Stephansdom is the remains of countless plague victims. It was creepy and eerie and fabulous...giant caverns deep underground filled with bones and skulls and skeletons. That same night we went to see Manon Lescaut at the Vienna Opera House for a whopping 2 EUR. Best budget decision of our trip. :]
