Back in Rio and reloaded ;)

Rio de Janeiro Travel Blog › entry 13 of 22 › view all entries

Although I live in Lima, this was the first time I took a trip around South America. This was my first long travel because of business. Usually I travel just to 1 destination, but this time I went to: Buenos Aires, Santa Cruz, Rio, Macae, Anaco & Maracaibo. The travel wasn’t because of fun, but… traveling is traveling and I found the way to enjoy it hehehe.

Back in Rio and reloaded ;)

mmm, Caipirinha

It was around 8:30pm when we were getting closer to Rio. Our friend asked us if we had plans for later. Mmm, no plans. It was late to make phone calls and the emails can wait another couple of hours. So, he suggested us to go to his favorite place at the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas near Ipanema. Blair was hesitating a bit, but I encouraged him, hehehe. What a good influence, hahaha.

My friend said something about having dinner, but this place was not a restaurant. It was more a lounge and bar. So he didn’t lie. We would try something Brazilian, but not exactly food, hahaha. The place’s name is Palaphita and its slogan says: it’s a mystical experience.

ARROMBADO: camembert cheese with pacovão banana chips and home made chutney
And they don’t lie. As soon as we arrived, I realized why this place is his favorite. It’s really great, the atmosphere, the view, the location, everything. Well a review about the place is coming. Before taking a sit, I was wondering where the restrooms were and even they are so funny. This place is the whole package.

Well, it couldn’t be different. We ordered a caipirinha for starting the night. It was good, but I have to confess I liked the one in Macae better. Maybe because it was my 1st in Brazil. We ordered some appetizers, because it’s never a good idea drinking with an empty stomach. Our friend and guide for Brazilian nights asked for beer for the 3 Musketeers and something special for him. When the waiter arrived, he was holding a shot glass with Cachaça ;) the Brazil's traditional liquor. Like rum it’s made from sugarcane, but tastes different.

why is everything blurry???
As soon as Blair saw it, he wanted one for him too. So, we called the waiter again and when he was leaving Blair ordered 2. I was thinking, wow! He really wants to drink. But the 2nd one was for me, oh! Suddenly some flash backs about an awful hangover after shots of tequila came back to me. At the beginning I didn’t want to drink it, but my 2 partners convinced me to do it.

We were just hanging out, enjoying a beautiful night, drinking our Cachaça (at least each of us had 4 - well, these are the only I counted), beer and eating different kind of Brazilian food. I just remember the name of one: PAI D´ÉGUA  which is a typical northern cheese with fresh basil, burned whith cachaça. The big plate we had contained meat, Pacovão banana chips, Home made chutney from pineapple and açaí (a local fruit). We had a blast there, just making fun of everything and talking about how great is Rio and the cariocas!

Around 2am we left and my friend drove us to the hotel.

the last beer - ufff
Was the night over? No, no, no. We stopped in the bar next door of the hotel. So Blair could smoke before going inside. But he also ordered 3 beers, the last I thought. I was wrong. He left, but not without being sure, the both of us had another beer coming. Wow! While we were having our last beer, I wrote a Peruvian's recipe in a napkin for my friend. Same as me, he loves to cook and promised me he would have a Peruvian night at his house, hahaha.

I haven’t drunk that much during the whole trip. Not even during the weekend. The only thing I was worrying about is that I had a meeting the next day in the morning...  Finally I went to bed around 3am and had a meeting just a few hours later.

No worries, I would do it. Hey! Rio is Rio ;)

Palaphita - A piece of the Amazon in Rio
I didn't know how to qualify this place. Is it a restaurant, a bar or a mix of both? Well, for me this is more a place to hang out and enjoy drinks and food, than just the food. So, I considered it a night entertainment place ;)

First of all I have to say that this place is considered one of the favorite ones in Rio. Well, its localization is almost magic. It’s at the lake: “Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas” between Ipanema & Copacabana, looks like if it were in a paradise. The building (if you can call it like that) remembers the typical buildings in the Amazon river, according to the tropical environment. Although you are in Rio and the temperature can be really high. The fact it is an open place, will keep you cool. All the furniture with a rustic style will give you the sensation that you are in a real house in the Amazon. The local has 3 areas: Palafitas (deck), Jardim (garden) and the Sape (covered part). Every part is unique, also the restrooms. This place is open day and night, but I recommend you to go during the night, so you’d be able to enjoy the beautiful illumination too. They use torches, so the light will be indirect ;)
The music is not so loud, so it’s the perfect place to meet your friends and enjoy a nice conversation. And the view is just breathtaking. :)

Regarding their food, they use the native ingredients. Mix the typical fruits to prepare their own recipes inspired in the traditional Brazilian food. Not only the food is great, but also the presentation of the dishes. They use Indian pottery, banana leaves, etc.
For drinks you will find the soft drinks: water, sodas, and also tasty juices "sucos" made with tropical fruits. Also they serve beer, and caipirinhas. You can choose either the from a different variety of drinks made with different liquors besides the cachaca.

If you want some chips, order the banana ones. They are organic banana chips fried in palm tree oil. Really tasty and brazilian ;)

Their philosophy is: Ser um lugar simples e primitivo onde urbanos se sintam sofisticadamente em Paz ! To be a simple and primitive place, where city people feel in sophisticated peace!
