Cluj is a district (judet) in Transylvania, northwestern Romania and occupies an area of 6,650 sq km (2,567 sq mi). The district is drained by the Borsa, Somesul Mic, Somesu Rece, and Somesu Cald tributaries of the Somes River.
Cluj Napoca
The city of Cluj-Napoca is the capital of Cluj. The historic capital of Transylvania, it is approximately 200 mi (320 km) northwest of Bucharest in the Somesul Mic River Valley. It occupies 16.2 sq miles (42 sq. kilometers) and 1,181 ft. (360 meters) in elevation.
Cluj Napoca stands on the site of an ancient Dacian settlement, (inhabited since 200 BC), which the Romans named Napoca and gave it the title of municipium .
In the Middle Ages the name of the city was Culus, as attested in documents of 1173, but by the beginning of the 15th century it was known as Cluj.
It became a thriving commercial and cultural center, and in 1405 it was declared a free town. After the constitution of the autonomous principality of Transylvania in the 16th century, Cluj became its capital.
In 1920 the city, with the rest of Transylvania, was reunited with Romania.
Nowadays Cluj-Napoca is one of the most important cultural and economic centers in Romania with a population around 400.000 inhabitants.
