Fort Adams
Some of my co-workers told me to go to the pretty city of Newport, Rhode Island. I took their advice and Wow, how I enjoyed going across the Jamestown & Newport Pell bridges. There is a toll to go across the Newport one but when you buy 10 tokens, a free one is thrown in. I figured I may as well do it since I figured I would be back quite a few times. The harbor area was crowded with people and I drove past the shops and saw a signs for Ocean Drive and followed them until a saw a sign for Fort Adams. I made the right turn, parked and took a guded tour for $10 along with a handful of other people. This is the largest coastal fortification in the U.S. and soldiers stayed here from 1824- 1950 and overlooks Narragansett Bay. We toured the inner area, which is 6 1/2 acres and went to the top of the bastions and got some great views of the harbor. The last thing we did was explore the tunnel system. We were warned that it would be pitch dark in most areas and we got flashlights. This was actually a listening tunnel below the fort and was even creepier after the guide made us all turn our flashlights off. The tour ended with the tunnels and then I drove the "Ocean Drive" after making a right turn out of the fort road. The homes along this road are majestic and some look as beautiful as the mansions you tour.
