North Island - Wellington to Auckland

Best news ever! We didn't have to pay for the cracked windscreen on our Van! Hooray! The bad news is that we are coming home earlier than we planned on 20th May. We are going to have to start earning some money now instead of spending it!! What a shame...
Anyway I'll get you up to date with what we have been up to over the past couple of weeks. We started our north island part of the trip by catching the 'Inter-islander ferry' across from Picton in the south island. We caught the 5.45am (seriously) so we could watch the sunrise along the way. It was so worth it and of course we took loads of pics! We arrived in Wellington around 9am and had a walk around a little weekend market and along the waterfront.
We spent Adam's birthday looking around Napier which is on the East coast of the north Island. It reminded us a bit of an English seaside town - rainy and miserable!! But we managed to find fun (indoor) things to do like go to 'Marine world' and look at the sealions and dolphins cooped up in tiny enclosures... Oh and they had a model train set too (of course!) which also made us think of an english seaside town - they have those sorts of things there don't they?! We had a look around the 'National Aquarium of New Zealand' which was pretty small but very good! As a birthday treat for Ads we also went out for tea to a lovely restaurant.
The next day we drove to Lake Taupo but because it was raining so much we stayed in the van all day! The rain was so bad but luckily it stopped for my birthday the next day! We went out for a lovely big breakfast and the plan was to do a skydive... but the weather wasn't good enough. We both really wanted to do one and Lake Taupo is apparently the place to do it as its the cheapest. Instead we went and had a look at some of the sights nearby which included a lovely waterfall and a place called 'crators of the moon' which is called that as there are lots of crators with steam coming out of them. The middle of the north island is full of little holes in the earth with steam rising up from them.
Rotorua also has a big hill with a Gondola going up to the top, just like the one we went on in Queenstown. It also has a 'Luge' but its much better! There are 3 tracks to go on and you ride this toboggan type cart down the tracks. It is so much fun and so cheap - we could have stayed there the whole day! We had 5 go's and decided that was enough! We also went on the 'Skyswing' which is this massive swing that you get strapped into then they hoist you up really high and let you go and you swing really fast out over the cliff! It was scary but really good! Later that day we drove to a place called Blue Lake and stayed there for the night.
The next day we headed to a place called Papamoa which is a lovely little seaside town which has a massive beach. We stayed here for 2 nights and even managed to get some sun bathing done as it was lovely and warm! Also I've never seen so many beautiful big shells on a beach before. We have a very good collection to bring home with us! If customs don't catch us! After Papamoa we stayed in a place called Waihi beach which is not too far north of Papamoa. We had a great spot in the campsite to park our van - right next to the beach! And the campsite had this little stream running through it which had loads of eels in it! Yuk! Oh and plus there were way too many kids around for our liking.
We set off to Auckland on Thursday morning early, as I had an appointment at the hairdressers! Yes I know I am a backpacker but I still need to look presentable for the wedding in Las Vegas don't I? Luckily my friend Vicki has just moved to Auckland and so she was able to book me into a nice salon near where she lives.
Today we have been over to another little suburb called Devonport on the ferry. Its so quaint there! We had some lunch in a lovely little cafe and then went to find this bookshop called 'Hard to find but worth the effort bookshop'.
We are setting off to Fiji tomorrow to sun ourselves on a beach for 12 days. We need to get our tans back! Such a hard life! Whats the weather like in England at the moment by the way? haha!
Bye for now X
