Uyuni, Bolivia

So I've decided to spend 5 months travelling in South America starting in Quito in late September and ending up in Buenos Aires in late February 07. How will it go? What will happen in between? I don't yet know, but you're all invited to find out..

Uyuni, Bolivia

From Potosi I took a pretty awful (or typical Bolivian) bus to Uyuni.  I had been warned that the journey that was supposed to take 6 hours was taking 12 hrs in the rain, and so elected to get the latest bus possible and treat it as a night bus.  This strategy was semi-successful, only it arrived at 5.30am in Uyuni which left me with a fair bit of time to kill before anything opened!

Fortunately the train station - which used to be the man purpose for the existence of this place - was open and I went there.  But as everything else opened I discovered Uyuni to have only travel operators and no charm.  This was possibly the most dead and lifeless place I had been to, not dangerous or particularly ugly but without redeeming features.  Apart, I guess, from the ability to sign up to a 3 day tour of the nearby Salt Flats and lakes further south, which turned out to be a fantastic trip.
