Day 2 and everyone - all the groups with their various tour agency stying in the same complex of run-down buildings - wake up to the sound of a jeep´s engine not starting. It´s ours. We wait 1 hour and 1/2 until eventually the team of mechanics (the drivers) get it going. So much for having got up early!
Still, when we do set off it´s another fantastic drive, firstly through a very barren landscape with a volcano in the distance. We came across an interesting outcrop of rocks and stopped to take some photos, and then got back on our way through desert landscapes with wonderful browns and yellows contrasting with the perfect cloudless blue sky. We came across the type of shy gazelle things they have here, grazing peacefully.
We quickly discovered that this was the major day of the trip as we passed by further landscapes, including a completely barren and dry desert landscape where the suspension on one of the jeeps decided to fail. This time it wasn´t ours, but it did mean we all had to wait around for 1 and 1/2 hours as the other drivers tried to fix it. It did give us a chance to have an interesting discussion on immigration in France and Argentina (how sad, sorry!) whilst sitting on a tall outcrop of rock.
Then it was back on the road and to the well-weathered outcrops of rock so reminiscent of surrealist paintings that the area is known as Dali´s desert. I don´t know if he ever came to this place to gain inspiration for his paintings - which I had previously thought to be wholly imaginative, inspired be his dreams - but it is certainly uncanny if not.
Finally it was off to our last destination of the day - Laguna Colorada. This was another beautiful lake where the waters appear a rusty red as the sunlight fades. And once again there were flamingos - this time huge flocks of 3 different varieties - spotted on the lake´s surface. We stayed the night on the lake´s shores, a lovely location though bitterly cold!
