Otavalo´s famous Saturday market

Otavalo Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

So I've decided to spend 5 months travelling in South America starting in Quito in late September and ending up in Buenos Aires in late February 07. How will it go? What will happen in between? I don't yet know, but you're all invited to find out..

Otavalo´s famous Saturday market

On Saturday we visited the famous market at Otovalo, where indigenous people from all around descend to sell their crafts to locals and tourists alike.  My spending was limited, even though it was my birthday, but some people came away with a whole wardrobe full of ponchos and other trinkets.  It only the market had been at the end of my journey rather than the beginning I think I would just have bought a second rucksack and filled it with stuff.

The major feature of the market for me was the wonderful colour of everything from fruit+veg to the clothes and fabrics.  And the fun of bargaining with the vendors for 10 minutes only to walk away at the end without buying anything.  How cruel!
