This morning Mauricio, Marcela and I were going to go to the Botanical Gardens but there is a problem with the new car, so Marcela and I took a cab to the metro and then caught the train. We got to the gardens, only to find that they were closed because there’s a big exhibition starting tomorrow and they’re getting ready for the grand opening.
So we caught a taxi to the Tesoro shopping centre, then went to San Diego shopping centre, the oldest shopping mall in Medellin and finally to Premium Plaza, the newest shopping mall. By then I was totally shopped out and we went home. Bought very little, just a fridge magnet, lipgloss and similar non-exciting things.
The car is finally fixed and we go to Tony Roma's revolving restaurant on the top of one of the taller buildings in town.
When I paid the waiter he was complaining to me about something. I’d given him enough money to cover the bill, right? Yes. Apparently he was complaining because I hadn’t covered the bill and a 10% tip.
My change is not brought back so I have to go to get it. The waiter is telling the girl on the register that I didn’t give a tip....in Spanish of course. They’re talking about me as if I’m not there; sadly this has happened to me more than once in Medellin. I ask, didn’t I pay the bill? Yes. Isn’t it my decision whether I give a tip? Yes. I get the change and immediately give it to a nice waiter who took some photos of us. The grumpy waiter and checkout chick are a little stunned, but one nice waiter is very happy.
