Sunset as I type this entry

I am typing this from the Hotel Rosario de Lago, Cocacabana as the sun sets over Lake Titicaca, Bolivia.

This morning when we left La Paz a little after 8 it was overcast and then it began to rain.  I have the best seat on the bus; it's one of those big buses and I have the seat behind the driver.  There are approx 25 people on the bus.  We pass through El Alto again and then it gets colder.  It appears that the rain is very cold as it is forming ice on the windscreen.  Then we realize that it has started snowing.  It is getting very cold, that’s when we find out that the bus has no heating.  I have lots of warm clothes, but most of them are packed in my suitcase.

Driver's head and windscreen. Bit hard to see out there!
BTW The size of my suitcase is embarrassing when compared with the backpacks, but I’m relieved to find that there are people with suitcases the size of mine or larger.  The driver is wearing a furlined jacket and has a rug over his knees.  The guide was sitting in the front next to the driver, but it’s too cold for him, so he moves to the back of the bus.  Oh, yes, and the driver has his window partly open.  Someone says that it's the first snow this winter.

We have to cross a small expanse of water at some stage.  The driver and I go across in the bus on a bus ferry.  Everyone else, including the guide, go by motorboat.  The guide has decided that it’s not worth the trouble of getting me on and off the bus and boat.  When we get to the other side and everyone gets back on, I’m rather pleased that I stayed on the bus, as everyone else is very cold.

Yes, it's snowing
I try to take a photo of the headquarters of the Bolivian Navy, a white building on the side of the lake.  It’s rather amusing, or sad, to find a Navy in a landlocked country.

The clouds and rain clear as we leave the mountains and come to Lake Titicaca.  We arrive at the Hotel Rosario del Lago after dropping people off at another location.  There is the guide, David, and six other people on the tour.  The others are all in their twenties (I guess).  A husband and wife from England, three girls from Italy and a guy from England.  We have lunch together in the restaurant at 12:30 and then at about 1:30 we go together to a small boat, 2 minutes walk from the lake and go across the lake to la Isla del Sol (Sun Island).  When we go over to Isla del Sol, Peru is on our left, Bolivia on the right.  We climb up the steps to the Pilkokayna Inca temple ruins.

Snow everywhere
The others then walk around part of the island, while I go back to the boat with the captain?  Well the young guy who drives the boat.  I need some help getting up and down some of the steeper steps.  The captain? and I then go around the island to Yumani to meet the others.  The ruins of Yumani are up a steep flight/s of stairs, but I only climb 3/4s of the way up as it takes me a long time and I’m not sure when the others are coming.  Don’t want to hold them up.  I’m not overly impressed with what I’ve seen.  I’m not sure if it would be better to stay here longer, say two or three days.  Lake Titicaca is very impressive, it really is massive in size.

The others finally arrive and we leave the island a bit after five.  The guide could have organised things a bit better.

Driving onto the bus ferry
I went to the toilet before they arrived, but then the toilets were locked.  OK for the guys, but I think one of the girls weren’t very impressed.  It was an hour before the boat gets back to Coca.

Had dinner in the restaurant, very nice food
