Menu, Hotel Casa de la Luna, Chiclayo. I'll have the Gordon Blue please.

I have to say this entry is from Chiclayo, because of the vagaries of the website.  But I'm in Piura.

The first picture is for you Judy, yes, I've finally seen it; that old friend of yours.  On the menu at Casa de la Luna, Gordon Blue, Pechuga de pollo enrollada con salsa blanca.  Otherwise known as Cordon Bleu, stuffed chicken breast with white sauce.

The driver (organised by the agency and already paid for by me) is supposed to pick me up at 9:30 but he doesn’t arrive.  I catch a taxi.  Linea bus leaves at 10ish and we arrive at Piura at 1.  I have the window seat again as chosen yesterday.

When we arrive in Piura I get a taxi to the hotel, no-one there to meet me.  No, I don’t have a reservation.  The manager, Oscar (woof woof), is very helpful.  They ring the agency; the usual apologies.  The agency will put money into the hotel’s bank account this afternoon and fax a copy of the deposit.  If they don’t, I have to pay and the hotel takes a copy of my credit card.

I check out the room, which is very nice and then take a cab to the bus terminal to organise a ticket for tomorrow, Impresa Loja.   I decide to buy two tickets, to avoid getting a bad travel partner.  It’s an all day trip.  Two tickets set me back NS56, AUD20.  I go for a walk to the local markets and am able to buy a cold drink, often they’re at room temperature.

Also I buy some cheap earrings.  I get back to the hotel and talk to the concierge about being taken around the town for a couple of hours.  At 20 to 4 I meet the driver Raoul and it’s agreed that he will drive me around for 3 hours for NS80, AUD29.  First we go to Catacaos where there are many people selling pottery, wooden articles and jewellery.  I find Raoul quite difficult to understand as he doesn’t enunciate his words clearly.  I think that perhaps we’re going to visit some catacombs.  There is a funeral in the town and many people follow the coffin through the streets to the cemetery.  There is a band playing dirge type music and the procession moves very slowly.  Apparently it will take more than two hours to walk to the cemetery, but at least there’s a party afterwards.

We go to the cathedral built by the Spanish in the 16th C and then return to Piura where we go to the main square and Raoul takes me to the tourist information centre and they actually have some information in English!  I notice that there is a museum nearby where the Peruvian hero of the War of the Pacific, Admiral Miguel Grau, used to live and I want to go there.

Markets, Piura
It is very interesting.  Peru lost the war to Chile, but Grau survived the war.  The Chilean naval hero, Prat, whose monument I visited in Valparaiso, won the war, but was killed in action.  Particularly interesting is a blown up photo of a handwritten copy of a letter of consolation from Grau to Prat’s widow, dated June 1879 and her reply dated August 1979.  Quite amazing.

We return to the hotel, then I go for a short walk and later have a meal at the hotel, sitting next to the pool.  It’s a warm, slightly humid night.  The voucher finally comes through at around 9 pm.  The agency has paid for the room.  I am talking to the manager, Oscar, who speaks very good English.  He invites me into his office and we have a long chat which is very interesting.  He laments that most Peruanos don’t have energy or drive to be educated or advance in their careers.

Hotel Costa del Sol, Piura, USD53, single with ensuite, wifi, pool etc.
