Not long after leaving Arequipa

I got a fright last night when I looked to see what time my plane leaves on Tuesday, to discover that I’m leaving today at 3 o’clock.  Watched Federer and Hewitt; well the first set was good.  About 9:30 I wandered down to reception to see what the checkout time is.  Noon, that gives me plenty of time to pack etc.  Another lovely day here and there are people having Spanish lessons in the garden.  A great idea, but I wasn’t going to be here long, so didn’t organize this for myself.  I pay the bill, NS419.5, AUD148.  That is for 5 nights at Casa de Avila, including pickup from airport, ensuite, wifi, basic breakfast and laundry and 2 day trip, including accommodation for one night at Chivay, to Colca Canyon.  Excellent value.

Reception organises a taxi to the airport, NS15, AU5.

Above the clouds, but not necessarily all the mountains
30.  I am there in plenty of time.  There is only economy class, my bag weighs 29 kg.  I can’t lift it anymore and I’ve hardly bought anything.  I really need to throw out or ship some stuff back to Oz.  Fortunately the clerk doesn’t say anything.  I then remember that I have to pay airport tax again.  This is done at a separate window.  USD3.57.

We leave a few minutes late.  The plane is a 3+3.  I have seat 3L and no-one beside me, great!  When they come around with a snack pack, I find that they serve beer, but not wine.  What sort of airline is this?  Actually it’s LAN and it’s a very nice, modern plane, just no vino.  I think that the captain’s Spanish is better than his English.  He did his spiel in Spanish with no problems, but got a bit stuck when saying the same things in English.

Coming into land, Lima
We will be arriving in Lima at……er…….sixteen ninety.  I think he got the length of the flight confused with the time.  I think he means half past four.

Until Saturday I am staying at Casa Bella B&B, Las Flores 459, San Isidro, Lima.  Tel. (511) 421-7354, (511) 421-1033.  USD55 p.n.  Total USD275, balance to be paid USD178.75.

I am met at the airport and taken to Casa Bella.  After the blue skies of Arequipa, Lima is dreary and dull with pollution and I guess no winds to send the pollution out to sea.

After checking out the room I go for a walk around the area.  I’m told that the area is safe.  I think it’s a very expensive area.  There are expensive cars. security guys and men, chauffeurs? hanging around, a Starbucks cafĂ© and hotels.  I have a meal, glass of wine and small bottle of Sprite for around NS65at one hotel.  Decide to have another early night and watch tv.
