Cambodia to Singapore; by any means possible! Notes from the thousands of boats, minivans, taxis, buses and trains of South East Asia. And, an account of the weird and the wonderful from this odd little corner of the world: Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore (and the edge of Indonesia).

The weird and the wonderful: Thailand-Cambodia

The Thailand-Cambodia border:

In no mans land between Cambodia and the Thai town Poipet, there is a very large and not at all discreet resort and casino. It was just weird because it was the backdrop amidts an endless series of wagons being pushed by very old people in headscarves. All the time they were rolling by, and sometimes with oddly large amounts of styrofoam... The point is, this giant complex is really, in the middle of nowhere, where you would think that no one with money would ever come, except to pass straight through.

Wow, that's really interesting; thanks for telling me that!

The reason for poi pet border to have wagons is that because thai and cambodia have agreement that local (cart type) might be exempt from import tax. That is why there is cart. You would not believe if I told you that I saw, Cambodia pushing a cart size of a car and as tall as a truck!
