Chapter Five

And into yet another world

Grant Grove to Cedar Grove

The drive from Grant Grove down to Boyden Cave, which is at the bottom of the canyon, is only 18 miles. Not much more than half an hour realistically, considering the slow, winding road.  But you travel from almost 7,000 feet down to about 4,000 feet elevation. And about one third of the way down is a side road, which we will not take today, but it leads to a very nice little lake called Hume Lake. Not really enough time today to enjoy swimming, fishing, or just lazying around the beach.  Once you start down and get out of the pine trees much of the road leads through scrub brush and grasses and allows you to see across or up at wonderful views. But deep down near the bottom you go through an area that took many workers and lots of dynamite to carve the roadway through. If you are afraid of looking down a thousand feet on one side while looking up at granite cliffs that rise twice or more of that above you this may not be the road for you. In a few places the wall above you actually comes out over your head. Granite is everywhere.
