Getting out on the road

View from mount St. John, down below is Tekapo town. The mountains rising up from the plane like that still amaze me.
None of the people in the fuzziest hostel of NZ were up for a road trip around the South Island (most people had jobs and so on) so I just hired a car and went myself (thanks to the receptionist there for knocking off a few backs from the rental price!). First up I went to Lake Tekapo alongside the Southern Alps, and I get my first view of the snow covered mountains. Pretty!
According to a Kiwi/Ozzie hitchikier I pick up along the way Tekapo was founded by a guy who decided to steal some sheep in Christchurch and then made the whole trip to the lake on foot together with his sheep dog. On the lakefront they put a statue for the dog, I suppose a statue for a sheep thief would just a bit too much, even though he was the founder of the town.
The lakes here have an amazing light blue/greenish color, I reckon  because they're fed by the melting snow, never seen a thing like this.
I went up for a climb of mount St. John, it's just an hour going up but a little bit tricky with all the snow and ice. The view of the lake and town was amazing. Although the mountains here aren't very high they rise straight up out of the plain which gives a darn good dramatic effect. No wonder they shot Lord of the Rings here, the landscape is pretty surreal.
