Kuching is not what you expect when you travel to Borneo. It's full of cars, mod cons and nicely trimmed lawns. And still it is, if only because the hostel I stay in (Nomad B&B) is run by a bunch of Iban guys sporting huge tribal tattoos put there during specific ceremonies in the long houses in the jungle. BTW it is a great place to stay, a small home away from home which is what I really needed after 2 months of crummy rooms. Nice to have a living room again, flatscreen & DVD's, people to play guitar with and being able to cook your own dinner :).
I went to check out the Orang Utangs in the Semengohh rehabilitation centre (yes they look almost human), loads of free museums and Fort Margherita on teh opposite bank of the river which almost gave me a headache because I had gotten the wrong jetty to take the sampan to the other side. But I got there, although this fort is nothing special and the Police Museum is not there anymore. The ethological Museum is quite cool though, lots of stuff about the tribes, the long houses, headhunting and the first westerners adventuring into Borneo.
