Subways, trains and so forth in Japan are very very expensive!
So if you go there, you better take the JR Rail pass, it's about 200€ for 10 days.
You can travel through Japan with the JR lines, and it'll sure be less expensive than buying one ticket per one ticket...

We went to maybe the cheapest hostel in Tokyo called JGH. You can access there with a JR line (Nishi-Kawaguchi station), which is good if you have the pass. It's about 5 minutes from Shinjuku !
And the owners there are lovely, helpful and very nice! You'll meet heaps of travelers there too.We paid smth like 13€ per night so that's quite good!
