Mont St. Michel/Pontorson

After years of research, I was finally able to trace my family history and discussed this find with my sisters. We set off to discover the land of our ancestors starting, of course, in Paris, the city of lights.

Mont St. Michel/Pontorson

Roundabout in village of Pontorson

Our next destination after Paris was Mont St. Michel.  The closest town/train station to the abbey is Pontorson. Make note that you will be on the train for a while and will need to change trains at Rennes or Caen. The journey can take roughly 4 hours or more to get out to Pontorson, and that is with a TGV leg from Paris to Rennes or Caen. I wouldn't suggest a day trip to Mont St. Michel from Paris. If you go, stay a night in the area. First off there are only a couple of trains per day out to Pontorson, and they usually run in the afternoon. Secondly, you will need to catch a bus to & from Mont St. Michel. Lastly you will need a good bit of time to tour the entire site.

It's really a beautiful area & should be enjoyed. Pontorson is a charming little village with lots of hotels. There are also campgrounds close to the site. I hope that I will be able to go back someday.
