Carcassonne
Carcassonne is probably my second favorite place we visited in France (Mont St. Michel takes first). Located in the Languedoc-Roussillion region close to the Spanish border, the fortified medieval city has been in use since the time of the Romans. The Cathars took refuge in the walled town, but were forced out by crusaders in 1209. So much history is involved with this amazingly beautiful town. It's a must see for any history buffs out there!
While looking at all the souvenir shops, etc. lining the streets of the fortified city, we came across a wedding procession. Such a romantic spot for a wedding. It reminded me of Michael Corleone's wedding procession in the Godfather for some reason. I realize that's an odd thing to say, but it's true. Someone was holding up the Virgin Mary & another saint, people were singing & a band was playing.
There are other reasons to visit Carcassonne other than touring an old fort. The other part of the city is rather quaint and has such an interesting mix of Spanish & French influence. A person could actully find some beans & spicy food in this town! Another thing to note about Carcassonne is that the Paris Meridian line runs through it. We found this sign "La Meridienne Verte" close to the fortified city. I looked it up & there is this project that aims to establish a plantation of trees along the entire length of the meridian in France.
I also came upon this old cemetary on top of a hill overlooking the gare. Oddly enough, I found the grave of an ancestor. That was pretty cool. The entire city of Carcassonne is really worth a visit. It's breathtaking!
