salar de uyuni - it can't get better than this
December 6, 2006
the moment i saw the first picture from the salar de uyuni, the huge salt lakes near uyuni in bolivia, i knew i will like it
but standing there in real life was one of the most impressive moments ever... but let's start in uyuni
we were picked up by our 4wd-vans early in the morning for a 4-day journey from uyuni through the salt lakes and down south near the chilean/argentinean border into the national park and back up again. the vans were shaky, had no air condition and the night accomodation was very basic (no showers!)
but there was plenty of space in the vans (4 people & driver) so we could enjoy the bumpy ride through an unforgettable scenery
we started with the train cemetery, which was a great opportunity to take some nice wideangle shots

next destination were the salt flats, a big white plane wherever you look - lunch break on a island filled with cacti was a strange but welcome alternative to all the white. after the lunch break we went further into the salt flats where there were less tourists and the typical pattern on the salt plane was clearly visible.... breathtaking!

over the next two days we visited several lagunas where not only the scenery was gorgeous but we also had the chance to spot tons of flamingos on the small lakes.

between the lagunas there were two places with strange rock formations, formed by lava, water & cold into very unique views

since there are volcanos everywhere we could not only enjoy (this time real) thermal baths but also geysir like steam & bubbling mud areas... nice to warm up in the early morning
