i booked the direct bus from saigon to phnom penh from capitol tours, a cambodian company. one of the two which offer buses that don't need to be changed at the border as it is the case normally.

to my surprise (or because we were only 2 foreigners on board) i could arrange the visa on arrival on my own and not by paying 5usd extra on board. the whole process was fine: bus to border, get visa for 20usd (without any bribe requests/complications) eat lunch next to the border and hop on the same bus again to phnom penh, without the bags ever leaving the luggage compartment.

the (mostly sealed) road into the capital city looks exactly how you imagine a cambodian highway... dirt road with a sealed stripe on top and jungle left and right

everything feels poorer again than in vietnam but still far more developed than laos. phnom penh is quite developed and prices are VERY high compared to the surrounding countries. all in all i don't like it too much here... same same, doesn't feel new or exciting or anything, and it is even more expensive.

seems like my cambodian leg will really only be angkor wat for 1 or 2 days and the rest is stretched out transportation between saigon and bangkok :-)
