after visiting the 3 most popular thai islands (i think?) plus the poor lonely ko samet up in the north two months ago, my personal ranking looks like that:

1. ko phangan
2. ko samet

3. ko phi phi

4. ko samui

in terms of overall experience... phi phi is by far the most beautiful island, but just developed in a very bad way which almost kills the experience for me. you should either wait 2 more years for the post-tsunami mid-range resorts-environment upgrade to be completed or take that time machine back to better times some decades ago...

ko phangan has got by far the best mix of nice beaches, good parties (at the beach!), good mix of people and just enough infrastructure whereas ko samui has crappy main beaches, crappier people, bargirl and chavs-heavy nightlife, and too much infrastructure. plus it's overpriced.

samet gets big bonus points of being so near to bangkok and having a lot more thais visiting than the tourist traps in the south.

after all i'm quite disappointed with the thai islands. i was expecting a vibe that has probably existed 20 years ago but since got destroyed by english pubs and travel agencies.

i'm not saying all islands should be left to nature without any infrastructure, especially when on 2 weeks vacation, i would appreciate a nice mid-range location with burger king, internet cafes and taxis. but ko samui and phi phi are just one big mess without direction or planning.

i cut phi phi some slack for the after effects of the big swipe, but i hope its redevelopment will be used wisely to correct that. i won't hold my breath, though.
