luang prabang... now wait a minute?!?

now what the hell is going on here... i arrived safely in luang prabang after a slow boat ride through hardcore rain (1h) and a songtao ride directly from the boat landing to the luang prabang bus station (3.5h) plus a short tuktuk ride into downtown l.p. (10 min)

checked the lonely planet guesthouses first, was disappointed. nothing special for a lot of kip (well everything is a lot of kip because they've let their currency devaluate that badly hehe but here it's even too much in us dollars) so i walked around the touristy area and by accident walked into one that was highly rated on looked ok, bit shabby & small room, but not too bad and with ensuite bathroom for 50'000 kip plus the nice location just at a sidestreet at one end of the 'entertainment street'

and then... after a shower and new clothes (everything got REALLY dirty on the way here...) i went for a walk along the mekong river which is just 10m from here and arrived at the boat landing just when the slow boat from huay xai arrived...

and this was...

i was so lucky that i did not take the boat. it looked like the whole khao san road was walking off that boat into the arms of tuktuk drivers... everything was there, best of khao san road and pai combined: the alternatives, the guitar players, the dope heads, the senior travellers, the cool travellers, the hot blondes, the ugly intellectuals... everything you love or loathe about the thailand tourist scene was storming luang prabang at once. absolute madness - king leonides would have kicked them all back into mekong shouting 'this is sp... ehhh luang prabang!!!!"

i sat down into tourist street to get some big, greasy burger after the bad laos food experience the last few stops (does that make me one of them... hell no, they all eat pad thai to keep it real or some shit). and it happened: quickly the cosy charming cafe/restaurant street morphed into khao san road... a little laid back laos style but still... amazing.

i mean, i won't complain... this is what i love, people watching, people watching, people watching... but this is laos goddammit, i didn't buy the visa to see those losers from khao san road again!

settled with being happy not having spent 2 days on a boat with them and started to bite into my burger only to be interrupted by a group of khao san road archetypes if i want to join them for dinner... HELL NO

ps: i love luang prabang!
