iguacu - argentinean side & itaipu dam
December 20, 2006
a long day awaited us today... first a visit to the impressive itaipu
dam (the biggest dam in the world.. although the chinese probably think
different about that...) then the argentinean side of the falls
the dam is shared between paraguay and brazil and everything looks really first world standardish... even the tours are perfectly executed... wow! seems like the brazilians run the shop instead of the paraguayans hehe
the tour in a bus around the whole area of the dam is free and comes with a lot of information as well... unfortunately theres only one picture stop on the whole ride, but still... its free! in my next life i'd do one of the bigger tours that go inside the power plant as well

anyway, never go to the falls without visiting the dam! its one of the modern world wonders and that's exactly what it feels like to stand next to it
after the dam, we were warmed up for the argentinean side of the falls, that is not only the bigger area but also leads you directly over the falls, much closer than on the brazilian side

trains and trails connect the different sections and everything is really nicely presented... first we went to the devil's gorge right above the falls with a great view and feel! of course lots of opportunities to get wet again... not too bad a thing considering the temperatures were still over 40 degrees celsius
during lunch, it suddenly started to rain for 10 minutes! strange... but it stopped soon after... we thought... so i got ready for the long walk through the lower trail and started with camera in my hand and cap on my head - 10 minutes later, a rainstorm began... not just rain, a huge bloody rainstorm came down!
it took some minutes to protect camera under 10 layers of plastic while i was already completely soaked... i hurried back to a shelter where me and all the other surprised people were waiting... and waiting... and waiting... it didnt help that the train could no longer run because of a fallen tree
so after 2 hours everyone just walked through the rain, which was fun as well! u gotta love the tropicals!
