Near the entrance to Hanauma Bay, best snorkeling ever?
Today is the day I've been so excited about, snorkeling at Hanauma Bay! Best snorkeling on Earth they say! Crystal clear, calm waters they say! Not today. Cloudy, windy skies and cloudy rough water at the bay. A big swell came in this morning and the seas are rough. They bay is defnitely beatiful, and I can't wait to snorkel it again when it's calm, but I had a hard time out there. I am obviously doing this alone, which isn't the smartest thing in the world, but there are a lot of people around and the water was supposed to be really calm, so what's the worst that can happen? Well I almost found out. The water was very rough and being that I am very respectful of the environment, I fought the currents so as not to run into or step on the reef.

So I got a chaley-horse in my hamstring, and almost drowned. That sucked. So I decided to cut my losses and try again another day. I found a phone number you can call before you go there to get a report of the water conditions. Wish I had known about that before. There were some really cool things though. I saw a Humuhumunukunukuapua'a while snorkeling and they light poles in the parking lot of the visitor's center have solar panels and mini wind turbines on them! Very cool! Also, the cardinals around here look very different than the one's in the midwest: they still have a red crest but have white bodies instead of red. The visitor's center itself was pretty cool with a lot of information on the bay and it's inhabitants. The busses don't come here too often so some other visitors and I took a private shuttle back to Waikiki
. It was 8 bucks or so but better than waiting another 45 minutes.
