A Halt at Karakol

Karakol Travel Blog › entry 16 of 25 › view trip summary

This was a trip to visit my friend Irina who lived in Bishkek, the capital. Most of the time was spent in Bishkek itself, but it included a long day-trip to the Burana Tower, and a three-day excursion around the shore of (Lake) Issyk Kul.

A Halt at Karakol

We headed first for Karakol, where we made an unscheduled stop so that Irina could buy some more film. From the shopping area there were glimpses of the snow-capped Terskey Alatau mountains; wherever you are in Kyrgyzstan there are reminders that more than 40% of the country is at an altitude of over 3,000 metres, and one-third of it is perpetually covered in snow.

Then it was on to the village of Jeti-Oguz and the valley which takes its name.
