Japan is the paradise not only for metro-lovers but for all kind of railways fans. It has probably the best services in both metros and intercity trains. But my first impression was ... not that good. We couldnt find the ticket machines, had to carry up and down all the stairs to find finally the machines that were at the different entrance, that sucks. But then with no bags it was just awesome, as long as you have the day-card for two systems. Yes they have two totally different and independend metros systems in tokyo, if you have day card that accept both of them its not problem if you dare to buy a cheaper one for just one company - or even worst a single ticket, you might be stopped at a interchange. They dont accept each others tikcets so you have to buy another one when using different line. That should all merge to one fare system coz its confusing and sucks. But despite on that fact the Tokyo metros are great!
We also used a lot suburban rails which are actually the same as metros, but run by another company and even monorail. Yes, the amount of metro/railways companies is huge, and they have their own tickets, dozens of fares and possibilities to get common tickets, but as atourist you dont know anything. so the best solution is combined day card plus JR-pass, which is the bestest thing ever! Love you JR-Pass!
