Vagabond Inn Executive Sacramento Old Town

Outdoor Pool at Vagabond Executive hotel, Sacramento Old town

Nothing to shake away the urban cobwebs like a lazy, relaxing weekend getaway in Sacramento. Poke around the historic Old Town buildings, enjoy the genuine California cuisine, shop and browse through the quiant shops and galleries. And then there's the Delta. You can spend hours and hours bobbing around on the misty Delta without ever having to see another human being. The beauty of the river and the surrounding marshes and dense greenery defies description. The Delta has a 1000 miles of waterways to explore, and your only company are the birds and the fishes.

Speaking of the fish, anglers come from all around the nation to spend weekends fishing in the Sacramento Delta, and fishing derbys are held throughout the Delta in winter and spring. The striped bass migrate through the Delta twice a year, in Nov and May. With this background, we look for Sacramento family hotels best suited for fish of all stripes, shapes and sizes, so to speak. What we're looking for here is a hotel which can keep the wife and kids happy with shopping and dining and amusement, while the rest of us hit the Delta. After a little poking around, I bumped into the Vagabond Inn Executive hotel in Old Town Sacramento.

Located just off I-5 and a holler away from Old Town Sac, with the State Capitol's Dome looming about a mile away, the Vagabond seemed like just the place to deposit the family, mostly because it looked pretty decent and reasonable and offered free parking. On top of which they don't charge extra for children below 18, provide connecting rooms for the family, and will happily supply you with everything from baby cots to rollaway beds. Basically, it was very clear that these guys would be able to handle the mind-numbing requests that mothers hanging on by a thread and kids full of energy at 4 a.m. can whip up. A full complimentary breakfast with bagels, waffles, coffee and juice for the entire family awaits you in the morning, and there's an outdoor heated pool, spa and a fitness center to work off the lethargy. The Daily newspapers and internet access provide some distraction and allow you to be in touch while on vacation. Like a said, a perfect place to dump the 'baggage' and head for the bait & tackle shop. Rooms average around 90 bucks per night per room and are furnished with microwaves, refrigirators, hair dryers and irons and work desks and all the usual stuff. More importantly, they're clean and neat, and everything works. Room service is prompt and the staff courteous. Can't ask for more than this for $90.
