Srebenica Saunter
March 24, 2008
Caught the 7am bus to Srebenica for the day. 4hrs each way and about the same at the destination. There is not much to see, and few people speak any english at all. The most obvious place to visit is the Memorial Centre - opened in 2004 by Bill Clinton to remember the victims of the genocide that took place here. It is actually 6km or so out of town, at Potoèari, but a taxi will take you and wait for small money.
On the other side of Srebenica is a spring promoted for its medicinal mineral properties - at Guber. Unspoilt forest trails and stream make for a peaceful stroll but stay on the path because this is the first place I have seen warnings re landmines. Not also that they use the cyrillic alphabet in Republika Srpska, in case you need to read the bus schedule for example!
For food I found a tiny cafe serving Burek for just 1KM!
