Hello Everyone,
We landed in Bangkok on Monday morning and quickly discovered that Bangkok is not the place for us!

Bangkok was hot, smelly, loud, dirty and cramped.  We spent our first day walking around Bangkok.  We visited a park, Rachel bargained w/ a street vendor for food.  The next day, Garrett's friend, Jessi, met us at the hotel for breakfast.  Jessi is newly out of the Peace Corp and now teaching english in Chiang Mai.  She showed some of the better parts of Bangkok and helped us to get around with out making fools of ourselves.  That night the three of us caught the train to Chiang Mai.

We slept in a sleeper car, which was a new and fun experience for both of us.  Chiang Mai is a much smaller and friendlier city but still it smells and is kinda loud.  Since we've been in Chiang Mai, we've learned to get around by Song Tao (a pickup outfitted w/ benches in the back), explored the city by foot and went to cooking school for a day.  Cooking school was fun.  Our teacher was very friendly and spoke pretty good english.  We learned to make some really good food and stuffed ourselves silly in the process.  The day after cooking school, we went climbing at the local crag.  Jessi is friends w/ some of the local climbers and they took us out and showed us around.  It was a lot of fun, the climbing is really good here but there's not a lot of it in this area.

Right now, Thailand is celebrating the festival of Loy Kratong, a festival of light.  It's been really interesting.  They've had parades, plays, singers, dancers, fireworks, and people put little boats in the river that are decorated w/ banana leaves, flowers, incense, candles, etc. for good luck in the coming year.  We've also been working on our Thai.

We've learned to say "hello", "thank you", "I don't need/want", and some of the numbers and foods.  Not much but we've found that to be enough to get us around pretty well.

Today, we got Thai massages for $2.50 an hour!!  They were very interesting.  Not very relaxing but a good stretch.

Good bye for now!
Garrett and Rachel
