Alpine ride

Greymouth Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

This was a spur of the moment idea that we went for. The furthest we had ever flown was 1 hour to Amsterdam so we were both excited & a bit nervous. We had 3 weeks holiday & stopped at LA on way out to meet a cousin of 70 for the first time!

Alpine ride

Got to rate as one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. (Looks like we're still getting used to the camera!!)
(Rob) Up at 6.45 am to get the shuttle bus to train station for TransApline trip through the mountains via Arthur's Pass. Wonderful scenic views of snow-capped mountains and little hamlets/villages. Arrived at Greymouth for approximately 1pm and wlked about 3quarters mile to our first hostel (Global Village). Very warm afternoon. Got chatting to a young bloke (Justin) from Manchester! who was 1/2 way through a trip around the world. Very chatty and enthusiastic about his travels although I suspect a little homesick at times? (Jan) Greymouth looks like a town out of an old American goldrush film. Quiant in a tatty sort of way. The hostel's pretty good - lots of artefacts from the proprieter's own travels around the world. There's a great old swimming baths in town built in memory of those who dies in WW2. Now that's what I call a useful memorial. The people are very friendly. Most of the shops are still shut for their national holiday but I did manage to get some more comfortable sandals.
