Mr. Robin made his nest on our porch light. I guess you could say:
Mr. Robin has decided to venture into our territorial home in Sudbury, but at least he is a bit smarter this year as compared to last year. Last year, he thought of building his nest in our mailbox; every morning he would tirelessly put straw, stems, and weave the grass etc. through his nest. Unfortunately, by 11am his nest would be filled in with mail, only to be re-filled by newspapers etc. by 4pm ... I felt so bad last year, so last summer I put his tiny unbuilt empty nest on our porch light ... I wish I had of thought of this earlier.
Mr. Robin must have 'got the hint', for he built his nest on our front porch light this spring. We returned from our Michigan travels (May 19th, 2008) to find a fully built nest and a birdy sitting comfortably in it. This years nest is perfect, and to ensure Mrs. Birdy stays, we are using our back door (as much as possible) so to not scare the birdy away!
Our family is a recycling family, and to my surprise, so is Mr. Robin (boy, how my values have rubbed off on Mr. Robin LOL) ... the girls left some string and thin streamers etc. on the grass (fall 2007) ... snow covered it all up and this spring, surprisingly, Mr. Robin was using the 'stuff' I had firmly asked the girls to clean it all up last fall, but I guess they choose to ignore me ... Well, at least Mr. Robin listens; he cleaned up our front yard and in doing so, put the ribbon etc. to good use >>> Now that's recycling!
With a late spring the eggs have not hatched but I wait patiently; as far as the 'camera' can see there were 'possibly'only 2 eggs laid, there could be more . .. but I do not want to disturb the nest to validate my suspicions. To end this springly story, Mr. Robin, you're more than welcome to do the spring cleaning in our front yard and in payment we will give you a safe, dry, and welcoming post for your nest, next year and years to come!!!
...He's not taking it to lightly ...
By June 1st, 2008 there were at least 1 proud 'Robin' feeding their babies every second ... 5 days later the nest was up=side=down on my porch and a Raven pleasantly perched himself at our porch digesting 2/3 babies ... those 5 daus felt long and now I really miss their 'songs' ... I hope next year Mr. Robin returns to build the nest and perhaps then we can enjoy the 'fruits of his labour'
