We all know that backpacking through Europe is an inexpensive way to travel. But as you get older, you want a little comfort and tasty food.

The Hotel Monaco was a pleasant surprise. It was one of those budget-oriented pensions/hotels that actually looked better than their website. The hotel is near the main train station in a commercial area, yet on a quiet side street. It is close to the tramlines and metro, which you may not even need because the old town is only a five minute walk from the hotel. The hotel had a very bright, cheery atmosphere and the breakfast buffet was very good. The coffee was excellent, and for me that says a lot about the place. The only complaint I had is when we checked in they said they accepted credit, and when we checked out, they were VERY reluctant to do so. Still the price is right, the rooms have character, and the bathrooms clean. A great place to stay when you're in Munich
