the greeks of the 21st century

hey people that got old... time to change it, dont u think??

in the land of the country which is called 'greece' today, the last 6000 years some of the most imortant civilisations of  Mediterranian, flourished & died. the 1st was the Cycladic, placed in the area of Cyclades (santorini, naxos, paros, myconos, etc) at about 4000 bc.  the 2nd was the Minoan, placed in the island of crete, which ended violently at about 1700 bc, by the eruprion of santorini's volcano. the 3rd was the Mycinaic (which is my favourite) that was the last civilisation before the great ancient Athens! in athens at about 500 bc, great sciences, arts & ideas were borned (like the earth is round, the existence of atoms & many many other...). ideas that placed the foundations for the modern 'western civilisation' ideas that would lead many centuries later to the industrial revolution!

then the 'Roman empire' came wich was based in the greek civilisation (buildings, religion & many more) but it was bigger & maybe greater.

.. then Byzantium followed for about 1000 years & then it was darkness... the Ottomans took over balcans & of course greece. at 1453 & for 400 years, while the rest of europe was evolving & creating some great things (europe of 18th & 19th cventury), the greeks were trying to rescue their identity (language & religion mostly).  at last in 1821 (25th of march as it has remain as a national celebration) greece started a big national revolution! it succeded! not because of the greeks but because the mighty countries of europe (england, france, germany), they decided that they want the control of the country, so they had to destroy ottoman empire.

unfortunately not many things have changed since then... greece is still the same.

.. no it has internet... we dont know if we belong to west or to east... we dont know cause we havent decide where we want to belong... modern greek people still try to find their identity, for the last 170 years! (so sad). politicians dont care about the country & the people. the people dont care about the country neither about themselves... NOONE CARES FOR ANYTHING!! how can a country or a nation move on this way?? how??

but maybe greeks dont care... half of greece was burned last summer, including 2 of the 3 mountains surrounding athens... that makes athens one of the most polluted cities in the world. but noone cares... almost one year after the fires 70% of the burned areas are indanger of desertation... but still no one cares... not to mention the environmental problem.

.. greece has not even started to care about the climate change, what might cause it & what can we do to delay it! but of course greeks dont think that if the climate change happen & the sea 'overflow' the only source of money will be lost... that is TOURISM! & of course the fyrom matter... we let fyrom use the name 'macedonia' because noone cared for that matter that begun 16 years ago! & of course now we are in agony & panic! but im so sorry my brothers greeks we re too too late for that.

after 'euro' the economy is slowly dying & people are gettin poorer & poorer everyday but still... no action taken yet... politicians do whatever they like, they steal the money that comes from european eunion to make fortunes... everybody knows that but the last 25 years the same people are in charge of the country! only chaos & insecurity! thats with 2 words the situation in greece the last couple of years.

.. personally im sooo sorry but i cannot change anything by myself!!

hey greek people... WAKE UP! forget the glory of the ancient times (its many many centuries away) & look forward!! protect urselves & ur children, defend your rights & do things to improve the future... dont wait for the distaruction to come & then search for a solution! i wish i will see a change soon!

ps. my intention is not to provoke anyone but the greeks that might read that...

Say it as it is! Having left Greece 13 years ago and thus having my mentality changed I couldn't agree more with all you're stating. I go back twice a year for holidays and my heart hurts emerging in the natural beauty and the artificial ugliness. And us greeks are even trying our hardest at many cases to destroy the beautiful greek nature (from the devastating arson forest fires each year to the many unfinished hotels and various buildings on lovely beaches that remained unfinished cause they're illegally built).

As if it's not enough that our biggest cities are by far the ugliest cities in europe and probably some of the ugliest worldwide.

And if one is to even try to comment on the neo-greek mentality he/she would need days of elaborating. It's just too big of a task. As much as I love my people (in the end of the day there are moments that can only ring true with other greeks, an old greek song, a linguistic joke...etc) there is something totally worrying in the national behavior. It's what you say, statege, nobody gives a f*** as long as their asses are okay and another element... This chronic close mindedness and the unwillingness to adapt to more advanced ideas. A rather spectacular example of such behavior is this. My very pregnant friend and I are about to enter a bus because a taxi was nowhere to be found. The bus is full, but not packed and all the seats are taken. Everyone sees my friend, no one gives up a seat although it looks as if she's gonna pop anytime. She's too timid and probably too realistic (living in greece permanently) to ask anyone for a seat. I do it on her behalf skillfully avoiding asking older people or some teenagers (they don't give a f*** about nothing anyway). I politely ask a man that didn't look like a total scum bag or something, around his early 40's- late 30's. And what does he YELL back to me? "Leave me alone! It's not my problem that your friend got knocked up!!"

Phew, out of my chest...

This blog makes me sad and depressed. How can people who live in such a beautiful country full of history and culture "don't care" ? I hope "everyone" wakes up before it is too late.
