Hula Grill

Maui Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

This is going to tell you what Maui is all about! . . .atleast from my point of view.

I'm not all that picky of an eater . . .really i'm not.

but the Hula Grill was disappointing. I think i expected the seafood to be glorious because it was Maui. well the Opah was just like anyfish you can buy frozen here in L.A . . and it wasn't seasoned very well. and that was the highlight of my meal!

no wait . . .the jasmine rice was . . .i'm not a rice fan, and i'm generally not fond of anything jasmine, but it was good.

now before you (or myself) completely write this place off, I will say that the service was quick.

but I spent $25 bucks for me to get a kick out of rice! so i round that off to being riped off.

I have always packed too much stuff. But i generally use the things that I packed. Not this time in Maui, LOL.

I figured i would go to a few places where i need to dress it up a bit. HA!

I spent 90% of my time in a bikini. rather it was alone, or underneath some shorts. Even the older travelers wore their bathing suits under some sorts . .at Dinner!

Sun Screen is a must! I'm African-American, and sometimes you'll hear, "we don't need sunscreen because we have enough melenin to protect us!" Yeah . . .right . . .i'm subject to skin cancer like everyone else . .so don't believe that hype. WEAR YOUR SUNSCREEN!!

I wore it head to toe. i tried to give my mother some . .i begged her to atleast put some on her face . .i told her how it prevents wrinkles (she doesn't have any yet) . . but nnooooo. Guess what, she is burned like a bad xmas ham.

so note to self: pack bikini, a few pairs of shorts, toiletries, sun block, phone charger, beach tote or mini backpack, camera ( best to use those disposible tourist kind . . .your digital might get wet. plus, it's hard to time the shot when your trying to catch dolphins), and a light jacket or hoodie.

I'm preparing to go to Maui next month and wondered if it was necessary to pack anything 'nice' and figured it may be the bikini everywhere type place but wasn't sure. Your review said it all!

I went snorkeling off of the Teralani 3 . . .I had a great time!

It cost about $93 per person . .i think it's a bit cheaper for the kids. But you get to chill out on the catermaran, meet new people, go snorkel, eat lunch, free mai tai and other drinks, see spinner dolphins, relax, and get a tan if you desire.

the crew was very nice and you felt comfortable. even the guest who brought the little ones were nice . . all of the children are well behaved.

Note:

1. Don't wear a hat. while it's good for the sun, it will more than likely blow away

2. wear sunblock!

3. make sure your digital camera has a strap on it, or it will share the same fate as your hat! use it and put it below deck . . .better yet, get a waterproof disposible camera.

4. ask for help if you need it . .they (the crew) are very helpful and don't mind answering "dumb questions"

5. bring money! i know, i know. you're like, "whatttt???" but there is this awesome photographer onboard who takes great photos of you and your family and gets much better picks of those dolphins than what you took on you cute digital . . he also takes great underwater photos . .i'm not sure if he ever came up for air when we all were out snorkeling. the cost is about 100 bucks for the whole experience on DVD. so bring a credit card . .atleast if it lost, you can just cancel the card.

Congratulations on your first snorkel trip! It seemes like you got the royal treatment in Maui! I've never been on an excursion where you had your own boat photographer.

When we first decided to go to Maui . .i said, "cool, i'll go snorkeling". then i realized that i can't swim . . .

so then I got bummed out. I went online to find out about how well i need to know how to swim in order to do it.

well this is for those who were like me right before I got to Maui.

It's not that bad . . .the idea of being in the Pacific ocean with sub-par swimming skills frightened me. and the idea that there were critters (dolphins, turtles, fish) in the water with me was even more frightening.

I went on the Teralani 3 from Kaanapali Beach. they take you out to some other bay . . and they were very helpful. they send off the experts, and stay with you and tell you how to wear your mask, and what-not. they have floatation devices (waist belt, and boogie boards), as well as head gear and fins. they won't push you off until you are comfortable, and even then another crew member goes out further with you on their surf board.

while the water was super salty, i had a great time. and the fish kept to themselves. the dolphins don't come that far into the bay, so i didn't have them to worry about. but there were turtles! the size of a tire on a SUV!! they were mostly curious, but shy. they don't really wanna get close to you. but everyone in our group swam around them,  so they were like right there. i'm not gonna lie, i was trying to get away from them. we're not suppose to touch them anyways.

anyways . . i had a great time, and i enjoyed looking underwater. i feel inspired to learn how to swim well, and not be the girl in the bikini who only gets wet waist down . .lol.

so try it . . it's fun, and worth the money.

The Whaler is really just a bunch of condos. but it was great. i like feeling like I was at home, (i.e dishwasher, dishes, silverware, blankets, blender, paper towels . .  .ICE!!!). The lanai (balcony) was nice . . .and it was fairly private. the place is so safe that you could leave your lanai doors open all night while you sleep!

the housekeeping was really nice . .i actually didn't need them to clean up, but they did anyways.

the view from my suite was good.

Beware of the hottub . . .it was too hot!

my view to the right . . .
my view to the left.
