Old School Bill’s Man Bag Horseback Riding Adventure.
March 17, 2008
The Unplanned-Impromptu- Spur-of the-Moment-Spontaneous-Impulsive-Unscheduled Old School Bill’s Man Bag Horseback Riding Adventure. It is Monday morning we are in Fayetteville North Carolina when I hear from the back room “I WANT TO BE A COWBOY BABY” “Old School take me horseback riding PLEASE, I have never been & remember how you are always saying we should extend our horizons, try new things, please please.” Well Man Bag has been behaving himself so I give in, so I find the phone # for Smith Lake Riding Stable- Building Q5340, Smith Lake Road Fort Bragg, NC 28307 910-396-4510
The Smith Lake Riding Stables has more than 200 acres of land and 10 miles of designated riding including wooded trails and water crossings, we stayed out of the water as it was a bit cool. Some riders report often seeing deer, raccoons and other wildlife during their horseback ride, of course they did not have MotorMouth Man Bag with them.
After a short discussion we "OSB decided a short lession would be in order. After being fitted to the saddle, there are no 6-way power saddles; we were shown the leather steering wheel. First time either one of us has had a non-round steering wheel, o-well.
Still not sure if Jen was a 4 or 5 speed, it was very different using both inner thighs to clutch with & both your heels to step on the gas, I just do what I’m told. Reverse is hard to find at times, double clutching seem to do no good, nor does yelling; Back up you Fine Underpaid Carrier of Kowboys!!
After about an hour in the fenced in arena I had learned- The saddle’s purpose is essentially to make the horse and rider comfortable by helping the rider maintain proper position by distributing the rider's weight evenly across the horse's back. I am not sure about Jen, butt it was not working for me!! We slow walked, then walked a little faster. We turned right turned left; turned right, did a fiqure 8, I never found the turn signals. Then TBBT (The Butt Bouncing Trot) - toes up, heels down, stop trying to look cool hold on to the Horn you Fool!! Press in with you thighs, push down on the brakes & clutch all at the same time!! There is a lot to remember, & I’m not sure but Jen may have known this was my 1st Rodeo. No one got hurt in the arena, do we stop while we are ahead or go on a trail ride. To the trail we go as soon as they get OSB a different horse. Seems Jen being a good Union horse, trails are not in her job classis faction, & it was time for her break! I am thinking great horses of yesteryear Trigger, Sliver, Scout. My new horse is named Bob, Bob the HORSE; he was nice enough so I did not let my disappointment show. We went out on the trail for almost 1 hour. It was very enjoyable, the sights the sounds, the SMELLS. 45 minutes in to the ride I lost my aspirations to go West Young Man & live on a ranch. I need an air ride saddle. We have now been horseback riding, we will go again, it might not be for a while. Man Bag had a good time, did not get hurt, so it was another GREAT DAY IN the LIFE Old School Bill & Man Bag!
