view from the skytrain stop
So I feel like I've been here a week, and it hasn't even been 24 hours since we landed! After exploring this morning we all got together and took the skytrain to a really nice hotel where we heard we could get a river boat tour from. That was one crazy experience! I had to throw out everything I just learned about rules of the road and safety regulations. I'm amazed that these boats don't tip (or maybe they do??). The type we were on was about 4 feet wide and 20 feet long, a capsize waiting to happen with the wake from other boats if you ask me! But our driver seemed to be the most cautious of the lot and stayed slow around curves and in narrow channels. We spent two hours just being ferried around to see all the cool things around the city, from temples to huge highrises to the poorer sections with people bathing in the water and washing their clothes.
We saw some type of dragon/lizard/snake thing swimming around and decided that swimming in the river was not for us. We stopped at one temple to walk around but other than that just relaxed and enjoyed the view. After that we had some food (more noodles!) at a mall food court- biggest mall I've ever seen.... stores as far as the eye can see in either direction. We weren't there to shop though and headed out pretty quickly in search of a local bar. We found one that John and Eliot had been to and had a few drinks, met up with Travis briefly, and then went back to the apartment to change/shower, etc. We all went out again to some more bars by a cool market but after about an hour I was falling asleep standing up so I decided to bail. I found my way back on the skytrain fine, had a little snack from the 7-11 downstairs, and now I'm most definitely ready for bed! I can't believe that was all in less than a day!
