A unique Dutch tide landscape

Carnisse Grienden

Carnisse Grienden

Situated on the river Oude Maas, an old arm of the Meuse, Barendrecht and Rhoon offer a unique natural scenery. The Carnisse Grienden are a fresh water tide landscape. The many pollard willows stand in water twice a day, at high tide. Pedestrians keep their feet dry thanks to small dikes and bridges. The area is protected and cultivated for its willow shoots. The trees are cut every three year. The willows are hosted by epifyts, plants that live on - but not at the cost of - hollow parts of the trees. These plants do not withdraw food or water from the willows, but live mostly on mouldered wood.

The Carnisse Grienden can best be overviewed from the Oude Maas Heuvel, a hill in the flat landscape. Around the hill a brand new park has been set up in a natural line with the Carnisse Grienden.
