it's time to pack the bags again. now, unfortunately, only for 2 weeks instead of i-come-back-whenever-im-sick-of-it. ah well, corporate life is a hard life. i also seem to have less disposable money now than when i was travelling; which is, well, frustrating.
nevertheless - 2 weeks of vacation in colombia can't do any wrong and might even be a nice break again. it's dodgy, south american and sunny (in the lowlands at least). as usual, i'm travelling during the rainy season which has never been a problem so far; so let's hope for the best! :)
i always had this fascination with colombia, partly because i have only met fantastic colombians so far, partly because of the bad image the country still has. the most shocking thing to see on my rtw trip was how comfortable & easy traveling almost everywhere has become; getting into roadblocks, dodgy situations and even dodgier nightlife will hopefully give me back some feeling of freedom & adventure.
however, i'm not planning to leave the beaten track... i'm all for adventure, but jumping between front lines is not really my thing. i will stick to 3, maybe 4 city areas and travel by bus, maybe even plane, inbetween. it's a holiday - flashpacking it is! and yes, splurging with single rooms in hostels :)
i will use this vacation also to test some new traveling-techniques, i.e. i will travel only with a small p&s cam (canon 870is) and (if i can fit everything in...) will take a duffel bag instead of my backpack. since my long blog was full with complaints about how stupid backpacks are i will try the other end of the range this time. since i'm planning on pretty much replacing my old wardrobe i bring with new clothes anyway, i will not need much space.
not taking my dslr was a tougher decision but i don't want to travel with a constantly full & valuable daypack again; this time all my electronics will fit in my pockets (camera, phone, sandisk clip mp3 player).
so much for the pre-trip thoughts... didn't do much preparation work. booked my flight through iberia (ahhh!!!! i hate iberia... but not 200 swiss francs worth of hate compared to air france!), made reservations in bogota & medellin so far and got overwhelmed with positive reaction from the colombian couchsurfing community thanks to almost 100% positive replies!
i'm excited! hope the nightlife will be great and that i will come back in one piece.. that's about all expectations i have. :)
