Day 5: Trans-Siberian railway
Somewhere in the middle of the night we crossed into Asia. I must say, once the sun came up, this part of Asia looked remarkably like the Europe we had just left: more seemingly endless beech forests rolling by past the windows.
Today we spent most of our time in the restaurant carriage. Not so much for the food (although we weren't so lucky as yesterday with finding food at the train stations today - we found bread and excellent Russian sausage, but my main warm meal was instant mashed potatoes...) but for the fact that they actually sold cold beers here!
We met a Russian guy here who wasn't as shy/rigid/uncommunicative as most Russians (of maybe he was just drunk) and he told us some great stories about his life and his business, though unfortunately all he said was in Russian, so we didn't understand a word of it. We did get a lot of laughs and cheers and the word 'Amsterdam' gave the usual respect it does in most countries. (Cannabis! hahaha)
