Mosaic Canyon Hike

Death Valley Travel Blog › entry 15 of 29 › view trip summary

After a wonderful winter of skiing in Big Sky, MT, we are headed to CA in our travel trailer to visit Mary, Dave and the grand girls. We'll hike in the 4 Corners area on the way back. We'll return to Big Sky in mid-April to pack up for a trip east for the summer. We'll leave Big Sky again on May 1st, visit friends on the way to Boston, MA where we'll fly to Germany on May 18th. We'll return on June 25th and spend the summer in New Hampshire and New England.

Mosaic Canyon Hike

Jean in Mosiac Canyon
We made a spectacular discovery today - Mosaic Canyon. Just above Stovepipe Wells is a canyon that empties out into the desert. One half mile up into the canyon the floor is only 3 feet wide, and the canyon extends several hundred feet overhead. The rock is polished smooth by the water that runs durning rainfall - not too often in Death Valley! Some of the rock looks like concrete with course aggrigate. Other rock is smooth, fine grained marble. There are several drops (10-15 feet) in the canyon that are not climbable by the likes of us. But there are alternative routes up the side of the canyon, and back down the the canyon above the drops. We made our way several miles up the canyon until we came to "The Grotto", which was a drop of 70-100 feet. We turned around there. We saw sign of mountain sheep, but no sight of the sheep themselves. Photos to follow.
