Hike Down Kane Gulch to Junction and Turkey Pen Ruins
April 4, 2008
Today we headed off on a hike of four miles to two sets of ruins in an area called Grand Gulch. The first well documented residents of this are were recorded as early as 200-700 AD. These ruins are called Junction Ruin and Turkey Pen Ruin. They are the remnants of the Pueblo culture which was here from 1060-1270 AD. The hike was beautiful, through eroded sandstone. Lots of water smoothed rocks. Views of canyon sides rising up to several hundred feet above you. A trickle of water in the streambed of the canyon. Then, tucked into the ledges on the side of Grand Gulch, a hundred feet above the valley floor are small stone shelters. Below the shelters are storage areas, kivas and rock art panels.
